During this time where many of us are at home, we have lots of time to do the things that we haven’t in a long time. For me, that is read! I love books and read relatively fast, but between work and life and SBK, I don’t often have a ton of time to read for fun. I listen to audiobooks in my car, but it’s not the same as a good ink on paper book. Here are nine books I hope I get the chance to read over the next few weeks, where you can get them, and some more info!
1. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein ($15.29 – Barnes and Noble)
This is the first book on the pile that I have started reading. It was my audiobook in the car before I started working from home so I wanted to finish it first. It has powerful lessons on how to use your faith and relationship with the universe to shed fear. This New York Times Best Seller is packed with anecdotal evidence of how Gabrielle’s methods have worked for her and her friends and I cannot wait to put some of her lessons into practice. So far, I would highly recommend this book.
2. The Extremely Busy Woman’s Guide to Self-Care by Suzanne Falter ($14.39 – Barnes and Noble)
I picked this book up randomly at Target a few weeks ago because the title spoke to me. I’m an extremely busy woman! I need self-care! The author describes the book as having some of the steps she took to transform herself from a workaholic to someone with balance in their life. On a quick flip through of the book, I discovered that there are writing prompts and quizzes throughout the chapters. I’m super excited to not just read this book but get to put in some work!
3. Avalon High by Meg Cabot ($9.99 – Barnes and Noble)
Do you like Arthurian legends and high school drama? Then this book is for you! I first read Avalon High in middle school and I loved it! I loved everything Meg Cabot wrote growing up and this book was no different! I’m wanting to re-read it because one of the first things I watched when Disney+ launched was the DCOM adaptation of this book starring Britt Robertson and Gregg Sulkin. As much as I love this wonderful DCOM, it reminded me of how incredibly different the movie was from the book. I mean even the main character’s name is different! So, I hopped online and ordered myself a new copy of one of my childhood favorite books and I’m so excited to read it again!
4. Buy Yourself the Fucking Lilies: And Other Rituals to Fix Your Life from Someone Who’s Been There by Tara Schuster ($24.30 – Barnes and Noble)
I think you can tell by the title why this jumped off the shelf at me at Target a few weeks ago. I love a book with a swear word in the title! This seems like it is going to be the slightly more vulgar version of book number two. Self-care is so important always, but especially during uncertain times. I hopeful that this book will kick my butt into gear and make me laugh a little during these stressful times.
5. Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott with Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis ($17.09 - Barnes and Noble)
How have I not read this book? I do not know. I loved the movie directed by Jane the Virgin’s Justin Baldoni, starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson (fiancée of Baldoni’s JTV co-star Brett Dier, but equally as charming and talented). This book follows two teens fighting Cystic Fibrosis and their love story. The movie made me sob like a baby, and I’m sure the book will be no different. Usually I like to read books before I see movies, but this one I didn’t even realize was a book… stupid Kayla! I’m so excited to finally read it, but not excited for all the tears that will come with it!
6. Get Out of Your Own Way: A Skeptic’s Guide to Growth and Fufillment by Dave Hollis ($19.99 – Barnes and Noble)
Y’all don’t even know how much I love the Hollis family. Dave and his wife Rachel are two of the most inspiring people I follow on social media. If you don’t know who they are, you are missing out! A little backstory - Rachel (author of the best-selling Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing) has created a brand off inspiring women through her blog, books and speaking engagements. A couple years ago, Dave left his high-power job at Disney to come work with Rachel at her company, now rebranded The Hollis Co. They spend their lives inspiring others to be the best them they can be and are self-proclaimed self-improvement junkies much like myself. I am so excited to read Dave’s first book, especially now while I am currently following along with their Next 90 Days program (check out March 31st’s episode of FIVE on IGTV for more info!). Long story short, I haven’t even read the book yet and I know you need to. So, go buy it and love these Hollis humans like I do!
7. Super Attractor: Methods for Manifesting A Life Beyond Your Wildest Dreams by Gabrielle Bernstein ($23.39 – Barnes and Noble)
Book number two by Gabrielle Bernstein on my list, Super Attractor is about manifestation and attracting the life you want to have to you. I started reading this book on my trip to Boston back in November and the first few chapters had me hooked, and then December hit and life got busy and I never finished it. I’m very excited to jump back into this book, after I finish her other book I’m reading.
8. Material Girl, Mystical World: The Now Age Guide to a High-Vibe Life by Ruby Warrington ($16.99 – Barnes and Noble)
Not only did the hot pink cover grab my attention, but the title itself. I have definitely struggled with combining my metaphysical and spiritual practices with my love of material goods and pop culture and all things “basic bitch”. The description talks about “[creating] a life that is both intentional and fabulous” which sounds like my dream. I’m excited to read this and see what wisdom Ruby has to offer on the subject!
9. Tarot for Self-Care: How to Use Tarot to Manifest Your Best Self by Minerva Siegel ($16.19 – Barnes and Noble)
Another thing I’m excited to put some energy into over the next few weeks is my Tarot practice. I firmly believe that Tarot can be a self-care practice and a great way to get in tune with yourself and the headspace you are in. I’m excited to dive into this book and see what additional guidance it can give to my self-care Tarot practice. On a quick flip through of the book it appears as though it gives the traditional and self-care meaning of each card, some self-care practices to go along with them, as well as the reverse meanings. I love anything that gives practices to go along with the lessons it teaches, so I have a feeling I will love this book.
So, there you have it, the nine books I want to finish in the next few months! If you purchase any of these books, leave a comment letting me know what you thought!
xo,
Kayla
