My Morning Routine

Writer's picture: KaylaKayla

After years and years of changing up my morning routine, I still haven’t found one that is 100% perfect. I am far from a creature of habit, so I don’t think I ever will. I love switching things up and searching for new things to do that will improve my morning and my life in general. This morning routine I’m going to share with you is just the current snapshot. It’s different than it was two months ago and I’m sure it’ll be different two months down the line.

5:00AM – Wake Up: You read that right. I’m currently waking up at 5AM every day… at least for March, and then we’ll see! My workday technically starts at 10AM, so I had gotten in the habit of waking up at 8AM, showering, eating breakfast and going to work. Then, when I got off work at 6PM and didn’t get home until 7PM I would have no energy to get anything done. This caused me a TON of stress. Simple solution – I needed to wake up earlier. So now my alarm goes off (to the soothing sounds of the Jonas Brothers singing me “Sucker”) at 5am.

5:15AM – Get Out of Bed: After 15 minutes of scrolling Instagram or lying there wishing I was still asleep I will roll out of bed. The first thing I do when I get out of bed is go and use the restroom and brush my teeth. Then I’ll come back to my room and make my bed.

5:30AM – Get Moving: Once my bed is made and I can see my floor, I put on my Apple Watch and turn on a workout on YouTube. My current faves are Lucy Wyndham-Read indoor walking workouts, Fitness Marshall dances (especially “Don’t Start Now” and “Look At Her Now”) and Up to the BEat Fit.

6:00AM – Shower Time: After my workout I jump straight in the shower. I only wash my hair twice a week so most days this takes 10 minutes (hair wash days, 25 minutes). Once I’m clean and smell like coconut and vanilla (thank you Native), I head back to my room to get dressed for the day and take my meds. Then I’ll go do my hair. Right now I’ve got three looks – try to freshen up my natural curls, straighten it, or throw it in a scrunchy. I’m not currently wearing a ton of makeup, but on days I’m feeling like it it’s the last step of my getting ready routine.

6:30AM – Downstairs We Go: After I’m ready I will head downstairs. The first thing I do when I get downstairs is fill my water cup and drink my Tropeaka and Sarah’s Day Body Bloom. Then I’ll pull out my computer and get to work. I’ll check emails for StyledByKaylaXO and my sorority volunteer positions, then I’ll start editing or writing or researching.

7:00AM – Breakfast Time: Once I’ve gotten at least one thing done, it’s time to make breakfast. I used to HATE breakfast. Not the food, I’ve always loved pancakes and cereal and eggs and all that delicious breakfast food. I just hated cooking in the morning and to be honest, some days I still do. My breakfasts vary from oatmeal and fruit to a full loaded scramble. It depends on my mood come 7AM.

7:20AM - Keep. Working.: After I’ve prepped my breakfast, I take it back to my workstation (my kitchen table) and eat while I get more work done. I’m super productive in the morning, a leftover habit of my two years in public schools, so this is the time when most things StyledByKaylaXO happen!

8:30AM – Pack It Up: After another hour of working from home, it’s time to get ready to go to work. I’ll pack up my workstation back into my backpack so it’s ready to come with me. Then I’ll pack my lunch, refill my water, and find my shoes.

9:15AM – Off to Work: I have a 30-45-minute commute every morning so I’ll be out the door around 9AM most days. I turn on an audiobook or podcast and head to work!
