Read with Kayla - August 30th to September 5th

This week started off slow, but then ended in some crazy fast book finishing! There are only 6 books on this weeks list, but get ready for next week since having Labor Day weekend to do nothing but read is going to make for a great week of books! Be sure to follow me on Instagram - ReadWithKaylaXO to see what I'm reading in real-time!

Physical/eBooks

1. Lady Romeo by Tana Wojczuk

This was my only non-fiction book this week (not counting the eARC) and it was a great one! Charlotte Cushman was a revolutionary actress who I got to study a little in undergrad, but it was very cool to get to dive into her life story a little more! I highly recommend you read this book even if you aren't a huge theater person!

Rating: ★★★★★

Read if you love: revolutionary women, theater, Shakespeare

2. Reyr the Gold by Melissa Mitchell

The sequel to Talon the Black was even better than the first! Claire's journey in Dragonwall continues with more magic, mystery, drama and even a little romance (?)! I love how well this universe has been built and can't wait to read more from the world of Dragonwall! I'm really starting to get attached to all of the characters which was something I struggled with in the first book. There is a lot going on in Dragonwall, but it is all connected and all important. I can't wait to see what happens to all of these characters next!

Rating: ★★★★★

Read if you love: dragons, magic, adventure

3. Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston

This was probably my least favorite book I read this week. I really struggled to stay interested to yet another story about a small town girl and a troubled celebrity. I did however enjoy the bookish setting and the shared love of a specific fantasy series. All in all this one was just meh for me.

Rating: ★★★

Read if you love: modernized fairytale stories, conventions, nerd romance, troubled celebrities

4. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Okay, this was probably the BEST book I've read this week. If we've learned anything in the past few weeks it's that I would probably enjoy Sarah J. Maas' grocery lists... I love her books so much. There were so many twists and turns I didn't expect in this book and I can't wait to read the sequel!

Rating: ★★★★★

Read if you love: magic, mystery, Fae, forbidden romance, badass women

5. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

This book has been sitting on my shelf for a couple months since a friend loaned it to me and I was happy to get around to it finally! It was really fitting to read it after ACOTAR because it has a lot of the same Fae lore in it. I really enjoyed this book. There is plenty of drama and magic and intrigue. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Rating: ★★★★

Read if you love: Fae, spies, magic

ARCs/eARCs

(I received these eARCs from NetGalley and their respective publishers in exchange for my honest review)

1. Straight Up by Trent Shelton (audiobook, out now!)

I really enjoy Trent Shelton's vibe. I could listen to him talk all day! He exudes pure motivation. I struggled with a few of his ideas, specifically how much he linked God/religion/the bible into success and being a good person, but I also don't come from a faith background and so of course wouldn't connect with that. My struggles aside, I really enjoyed how authentic this book felt to who Trent is and can absolutely see it resonating with teens who come from a faith background.

Do I agree with all of the messages? No (I especially struggled with the chapter about sex). But did I enjoy listening to Trent's stories and motivation? Absolutely.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me access to this eARC!

Rating: ★★★

Read if you love: advice, motivation, football, Christianity

I hope you all have an incredible rest of your Labor Day weekend and get lots of reading done!

xo,

Kayla
